Becoming Berkshire: 1970 Part 2 - Blue Chip Stamps
πWelcome back to 1970 as we continue our journey throughout this tumultuous year. Before we continue, I want to thank those who have recently subscribed and give a welcoming hug to the several new paid subscribers.
First, I want to thank everyone who has read this newsletter over the last 12 months; your support is what keeps me up at night writing. Second, my heart goes out to those currently affected by the California wildfires.
2024 was a stellar year and a surprise since many economists and pundits forecasted a recession due to the inverted yield curve and the Fedβs ability to pull off a soft landing. Wall Streetβs largest firms predicted the S&P 500 would finish at the following ranges:
"We are forecasting the S&P 500 to end 2024 at 4,257."
"The S&P 500 would be fairly valued in the 4,750 range by the end of 2024."
The "S&P 500 [will] end 2024 between 4,700 and 4,800."
"Our year-end 2024 fair-value target range [is] 4,850 to 4,950."
"Our year-end target for the S&P 500 is 4,940."1
The S&P 500 finished at 5,881, up approximately 23%, far from the ranges given by Wall Streetβs βbest.β Itβs a bit concerning that many of these experts are optimistic about 2025.
We had our fair share of financial headlines this year:
The Securities and Exchange Commission allows mainstream investors to buy and sell bitcoin
Nvidia hitting 2 trillion, then 3 trillion
Dow Jones hitting 4,000
Google losing an antitrust case
Starbucks replacing Laxman Narasimhan with Chipotleβs Brian Niccol.
Our first rate cut since 2020
Not to mention a couple of wars, hurricanes, assassination attempts, and a presidential election.
My friend Chima, also a partner in Sabre Arc, has written a wonderful recap for 2024, which has saved me the trouble of drafting my own.
